The olive trees thought to have been taken to Peru in 1540 by capital's first mayor, and that it then spread from Lima to the rest of Latin America. Peru's olive oil industry is small even in comparison with those countries considered to be low producers. The country holds about 10000 hectares of olive groves (24500 acres) , 8500 of which produce olive oil. Olive trees are mainly grown in the southern coastal region, between Tacna, Arequipa and Ica. Picual, Arbequina, Hojiblanca, Corantina, Koroneiki are the main cultivars that have adapted well to the hot microclimate along southern coastal where biodiversity, biological cycle and biological activities are very well respected by producers.
